U. S. troops establish beachheads at Utah Beach and Omaha Beach during Allied invasion of Western Europe (D-day). General Omar N. Bradley leads U.S. 1st Army into Normandy, France, and captures Cherbourg. U.S. 3rd sweeps through northern France, relieves Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge and crosses the Rhine into southern Germany. U.S. 7th Army invades southern France and fights up the Rhone River.
Congress creates a new rank, General of the Army ("five-star general") for Generals Dwight D. Eisenhower, Henry ("Hap") Arnold, Douglas Mac Arthur and George C. Marshall.
