Grover Cleveland
(1837-1908)

Cleveland was the twenty second and twenty fourth president of the United States (1885-1889, 1893-1897).

His reputation for honesty and accommodation with Tammany Hall won him the governorship in New York in 1892. As president in 1894 he used antitrust injunctions to end the Pullman Strike. In foreign affairs he was criticized for withdrawing the annexation and intervening in the boundary dispute between Britain and Venezuela in 1895.

Cleveland's polices were repudiated by the Democrats in 1896, when they nominated William Jennings Bryan on a free silver platform.
