Sumner
William Graham Sumner
(1840-1910)

Yale political science professor and Social Darwinist (Apologist), William G. Sumner was the American counterpart of the British evolutionary theorist, Herbert Spencer.

Democracy, Sumner contended, was a condition not based on reason but on the customs resulting from the availability of much free land in America. As available land declined, customs would slowly change demonstrating that Democracy was a temporary condition.
