President Roosevelt publishes Outdoor Pastimes of an American Hunter, marking the beginning of an interest in open-air living. He is joined by Stewart Edward, John Muir, and John Burroughs, who published many books and articles on outdoor living.

Wisconsin enacts the first direct primary law.

The Department of Commerce and Labor is established

The Hay-Buneau-Varill Treaty authorizes the United Sates to construct the Panama Canal.

Orville and Wilbur Wright, Ohio bicycle makers, launch the world's first successful manned flight in a motorized Airplane. The flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, coverer ed 852 feet and lasted 59 seconds. (Click here to check out the Wright Brothers).

W.E.B. DuBois publishesThe Soul of Black Folk.

Richard Stieff designs the first teddy bears named after President Theodore Roosevelt.

The first Pacific cable opens. President Roosevelt sends a message around the world. It comes back to him in 12 minutes.

The Supreme Court rules that Puerto ricans are not aliens through they are not classified as United States citizens.

The People Party, Socialist Laborites and Prohibitionists again nominate separate candidates for President.


Theodore Roosevelt is reelected President of the United States and the Republican Party retains control of the House and the Senate.

New York City subway begins service. The line later becomes the first subway to run underground and in underwater tunnels.

The first "perfect" major league game pitched by Cy Young of Boston Americans who does not allow a single Philadelphia player to each first base.

A woman is arrested in New York City for smoking a cigarette while riding in an open automobile.
